Blog Entry 14: Final Essay

Option Two: The Meaning of Creatures

                                            "SUPERNATURAL BEINGS"

This semester we have explored the world of the super natural. As we have watched films like Stardust directed by Matthew Vaughn, Spirited Away directed by Hayao Miyazaki and read the novel Coraline by Neil Gaiman we can see that all these films and books relate to the same theme and topic of the supernatural. This subject is very popular in the 20th century; its mystery opens up our minds and takes us to where the impossible and unthinkable can live. Most of the movies, books, TV shows and  films now a days all have creatures from the afterlife such as ghost, demons, devils, gods, vampires, talking cats, magic, fairy’s, werewolves and many more that are even unknown and unnamed, all these and many more run thought the pages of literature and imagination of the living.

In the film Stardust we saw how humans can interact with the super natural and super beings. Seeing a “human star” fall in love with a “regular human being” shows us that there is no limit to the script writer and director’s imagination. We saw witches, thresholds, good and bad magic, talking animals, ghost, a star in the shape of a human being and many more. In the film Spirited Away I saw some of the craziest creatures that I had seen in my life, I could tell the director really wanted to make an impact with his choice of characters and he clearly did. His imagination opened the door to a wonderful and scary world of a mysterious community of the supernatural. Once passed the threshold inside a church we saw dragons, magic, paper birds, fairy food, human pigs, talking frogs, huge babies, witches and some beings that I can’t even describe. A very interesting book we read also opened up the world of the unknown; in Coraline we see a talking cat, children ghost, fairy food, talking dolls, talking rats, weird creatures, the afterlife and so much more.  The writer’s imagination is as big as he/she wants it to be and there are never too many supernatural or strange characters that a book or movie can have.

I believe humans continue to write, create and explore the world of the super natural because it is believed that passed the “real world” there is another type of life out there that many are waiting for and want to know about. There are so many un-answered questions about this topic that it is left to our imagination to answer them ourselves. All these supernatural stories have been passed on from generation to generation and it is up to us to keep these stories alive. As long as there is life (humans) these stories will never stop being told, they will just change and will get added more details and life to each mysterious character. As the years pass by, we see how some of the most popular shows and films all include some type of supernatural beings, shows like Vampire Diary’s, True Blood (my favorite show), Supernatural, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and many more all related to each other.

As long as there are people around, there will always be the curiosity about what is passed the “other door” (the threshold to another dimension) and the story’s will never end. Where there is good there will always be bad, such as good or bad magic. The supernatural is just a matter of expanding, believing and putting your imagination to work. If there was no supernatural, there would be nothing to fear. In my opinion, I do believe there is something passed just human life. All these films and books is what keep our imagination alive into a world full of mystery, adventure and the unknown.
